4th quarter 2016 updates

I would like to take this time to wish everyone a Happy New Year for 2017. There is a lot going on in Camillus right now and I would like to keep you as updated as possible. Always feel free to contact me via phone or email with any questions.

2017 Town Budget – The Camillus Town Board approved the 2017 Budget this past November. It has been a challenge to keep costs in line while providing the many services to town residents. By working with all our department heads, we were able to stay under the NYS Tax Cap with an increase of 1.35%, or approximately $.09 per thousand of assessed value.

The entire budget can be found at http://www.townofcamillus.com/documents/2625.pdf

Camillus Parks & Recreation – The Camillus Senior Center continues to grow by leaps and bounds. Recently due to a $50,000 Federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) administered through Onondaga County Community Development, the Senior Center parking was re-paved. Plans are underway for the construction of a new playground in Camillus Park.  This project is possible due to New York State grants provided by Senator John DeFrancisco and Assemblyman Gary Finch.  It is anticipated that construction of the new playground will take place during the summer of 2017. Looking for something fun this winter?  Be sure to check out the ski hill located next to East Hill Elementary school.  The tubing park is in full swing with an operational tow rope this winter.  For details, please check out the following website:  http://www.camillusskihill.com/. It is a great opportunity close to home.

Prescription Drug Disposal – The Camillus Police Department is providing Camillus residents an easy, safe and convenient way to properly dispose of expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs by placing a permanent medication collection box located in the Municipal Building.

Camillus police detectives will be responsible for the collection, security and destruction of drugs from the heavy steel, locked box that works much like a bank deposit-collection device.  This secure medication collection box was purchased for our residents with money seized from local drug dealers, is monitored with a video camera, will be emptied frequently and the contents placed in the police station’s vault while awaiting destruction.

Prescription drug abuse in the United States is increasing at alarming rates, especially for young adults who report they can easily obtain prescription pills from medicine cabinets in their own and other people’s homes.  This type of drug abuse is a major concern in communities across our country, including Camillus.  This new program will take drug disposal efforts to a new level in our town and reduce the availability of prescription drugs that have the potential to cause great harm in our community.

Winter Parking – The Camillus Police Department is requesting the assistance of our citizens to keep our roadways safe during the upcoming winter months.

In order to ensure safe roadways and to assist the Camillus Highway Department with their excellent snow removal efforts, Camillus Police Officers will be enforcing the winter parking ordinance.

The Town of Camillus ordinance states that, “No motor vehicle or other vehicles of any kind shall be allowed or permitted to park on any town road or on property owned by the Town of Camillus between the hours of 1:00am to 6:00am from December 1st to April 1st of the succeeding year.”

Each violation of this ordinance is declared to be a traffic infraction punishable by a fine of not less than $25 for the first offense and by a fine of no less than $25 for each subsequent offense, plus towing charges.

Senior Center – The once small group at the Senior Center in Camillus has blossomed into a very active senior center under the direction of Trisha Bacon. If you are a senior and want to get out for some fun and camaraderie go to the Town of Camillus web site link “Senior Center” or call Trisha at 672-3163 for more information. Inland Cargo Port – Engineers preparing the report on the Inland Port have named Camillus as the one of six potential sites. Engineers and officials associated with the project met with the Town Board and shared conceptual drawings detailing the plans for the project. The site would be located on waste bed 12 on the former Allied Chemical site. The site is south of the CSX railroad tracks, between Route 695 and Airport Rd. across from the Fairgrounds. The property is isolated from residential areas, it is located next to the railroad line and has plenty of room for the off loading of Cargo. There is also plenty of room for warehousing and manufacturing facilities that often follow these projects. Truck traffic from the site will not enter any local roadways. They will use the highway to get to Route 81 or I-90. The hope is that this could bring hundreds or even thousands of jobs to the area. We hope to hear a final decision soon.

Township Five updates – Workers from All Wall Builders are working on the shell of what will be a new Petco store near the Movie Tavern in Township 5 in Camillus. The 13,000-square-foot store is expected to open in February, according to a newsletter from the Cameron Group LLC, which is building the center located off Hinsdale Road near Route 5. All Wall Builders has also begun construction of a 19,000-square-foot building for multiple retail tenants, said general contractor Alex Ewaniszyk. Cameron’s newsletter says Vine & Barrel will open early next year as the anchor tenant for the building also located near Movie Tavern. The Cameron Group has presented plans for a new 90-room tru by Hilton hotel to the Camillus planning board.  Construction is to begin in the spring with the hotel completed within a year.
