Parks & Recreation – Work has begun on a new outdoor fitness area in Camillus Park.  This area will consist of 12 fitness stations on a concrete pad that allow opportunities for strength training and cardiovascular workouts.  The area will be located directly in front of the splash pad and is expected to be completed by the middle of June.

The Emerald Ash Borer – is a small green beetle whose larva feed on the living tissue of ash trees between the bark and the wood. Unfortunately, this species has been found in Camillus. The Town has started to work with Cornell Cooperative Extension to create a plan to prevent this from doing great damage to our trees. I will send more information out to my email recipients and report more about this problem in my August newsletter.

Development – At the April 9th Planning Board Meeting, Harbor Freight Tools presented its signage application as they are planning on opening a store adjacent to Aldi’s on Milton Avenue across from the Home Depot Plaza.  Freedom of Espresso is now open in the village of Camillus. The new coffee shop in the former Camillus Cutlery headquarters on West Genesee Street is the fifth Freedom of Espresso in the Syracuse area. Anna Dobbs, the owner of the local coffee chain, threw a customer appreciation party on Sunday. She said the new store will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays. Franklin Properties and Thomas Blair redeveloped the former knife factory into apartments. The $9.2 million project will include 7,500 square feet of commercial space. The history of Camillus Cutlery stretches back to 1876. It moved to Camillus in 1902 to make knives in a factory on the banks of Nine Mile Creek. The company employing generations of Camillus residents, at one time supplied knives to the U.S. military.

Snowplow Lawn Damage – Due to the massive amounts of snow that we had during the winter, there has been some damage to yards and lawns. Please contact the Highway Department (M-F 7:30 – 3:30 at 315- 672-5556) and give your name and address, they will repair and seed any property the plows inadvertently damaged. The highway did a great job this winter removing all the snow; let’s hope the plowing is done for the season. The trucks are starting to pick up yard waste, please remember to leave it on the side of your yard and not into the street. That creates a hazard for drivers and increase costs.

Road Improvement Grants $265,988.86 – The Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS) is an important form of state aid for municipalities, helping localities to maintain local roads and bridges.  In addition to maintaining the same amount of CHIPS aid Camillus received last year, the NYS Senate developed a Local PAVE-NY program and an Extreme Winter Recovery Apportionment. The total Camillus will be receiving in CHIPS, the Local PAVE-NY grant and the Extreme Winter Recovery Apportionment will be $265,988.86.

Fairmount Community Church Property – Many have expressed questions into what is being proposed for development at the former site of the Fairmount Community Church.  From the Planning Board Minutes of April 9, 2018 (Please note these are conceptual in nature): Mr. Stephen Calocerinos, of Calocerinos Engineering, representing Rocklyn West and Mr. Arthur Kanerviko, of Rocklyn West asked to have an informal discussion regarding the former site of the Fairmount Community Church located at the corner of West Genesee Street and Whedon Road. The property involved is contains three parcels. There are two larger parcels totaling approximately 6 acres which will be developed as part of the proposal. There is a third parcel in the lower quadrant of the property which contains a single family house which will not be part of the project and will be maintained and owned by another entity. The proposal is for two multi-family buildings. The buildings will be three story buildings, with basement level garages. There will be a total of 84 units. A community center is planned along with a 9000 square foot commercial building. The commercial building will house professional businesses such as real estate, an accounting office and a medical office.

Verizon FIOS – The Town has been working to get Verizon to extend coverage to the western portion of the Town. It appears that according to Verizon this may be done in the 4th quarter of this year. As details emerge, I will let everyone know.
